Why do we need help from private landowners?

Even though Tasmania has relatively large areas in public reserves there are many species and habitats that are not well protected, and these areas often occur on privately owned land? Tasmania's public reserve system alone will not guarantee the protection of these natural values. Thus, private landowners play a very important role in efforts to conserve Tasmania's unique natural values.

Will a conservation covenant change my land uses?

The conditions in a conservation covenant are negotiated with the landowner and arc designed to protect the natural values of the land.

In many cases other land uses will be compatible with this, talk to one of the staff of PAPL to find out what would be acceptable in your case.

What if I have a house on my land, or a working farm, or a dog?

All of these may be compatible with a conservation covenant. Talk to the staff at PAPL to find out what you can include in your conservation covenant.

How will I benefit from having a covenant?

There are many benefits gained by having a conservation covenant on your land. They include; exemption from paying land tax, rate rebates, and expert advice about managing your land. I laving a covenant also helps if' you apply for grants or environmental work. 13y retaining remnant native vegetation you and your community' benefit from erosion and salinity protection and you provide shade and shelter for livestock, while protecting wetlands, catchments and water quality. You will also gain peace of mind as you will be protecting your land for future generations and contributing to nature conservation in Australia.
