| THE PROTECTED
AREAS ON PRIVATE LAND PROGRAM
Some Frequently Asked
Questions
Why do we need help from private landowners?
Even though Tasmania has relatively large areas in public
reserves there are many species and habitats that are not
well protected, and these areas often occur on privately owned
land? Tasmania's public reserve system alone will not guarantee
the protection of these natural values. Thus, private landowners
play a very important role in efforts to conserve Tasmania's
unique natural values.
Will a conservation covenant change my land
uses?
The conditions in a conservation covenant are negotiated
with the landowner and arc designed to protect the natural
values of the land.
In many cases other land uses will be compatible with this,
talk to one of the staff of PAPL to find out what would be
acceptable in your case.
What if I have a house on my land, or a working
farm, or a dog?
All of these may be compatible with a conservation covenant.
Talk to the staff at PAPL to find out what you can include
in your conservation covenant.
How will I benefit from having a covenant?
There are many benefits gained by having a conservation covenant
on your land. They include; exemption from paying land tax,
rate rebates, and expert advice about managing your land.
I laving a covenant also helps if' you apply for grants or
environmental work. 13y retaining remnant native vegetation

protection and you provide shade and shelter for livestock,
while protecting wetlands, catchments and water quality. You
