The Tasmanian Farmers & Graziers Association (TFGA) is leading a new project to develop and trial a voluntary Farm Self Assessment Tool for Tasmanian agriculture. Focusing on a self assessment approach to on-farm environmental issues, the aims of FarmSAT are to:
- Assist producers to assess and demonstrate their environmental credentials;
- Support producers to manage environmental requirements; and
- Generally raise awareness of environmental issues relevant to Tasmanian agricultural businesses.

Who is FarmSAT For & How Will it Help?
FarmSAT will assist a producer in any commodity to very quickly look at environmental assurance issues relevant to their enterprise.
FarmSAT is suitable for single and multi-enterprise operations; it aims to provide a single starting point regardless of what you farm. FarmSAT will help producers answer questions such as:
- Do your current practices meet legal and regulatory requirements?
- Is your business in a position to take advantage of environmental incentives or new markets if they come along?
- Are you doing the best you can and can you prove it?
Getting the Most from FarmSAT
FarmSAT Project Manager, Tony Clarke and facilitators, Daryl Connelly and Celia Leverton, are available to help producers work through FarmSAT and to provide any additional information that may be requested.
 The tool consists of a series of questions covering a range of farming practices such things as management of soil, nutrients, water, chemicals, pests, weeds and vegetation.
By working through the questions in FarmSAT producers are able to record their good agricultural practices, and if further information is required Tony, Daryl and Celia will find it!
So while FarmSAT might look like a checklist of questions, with the help of the Project team, the process gives producers an opportunity for a friendly chat about their farming practices, their business and have someone on hand who will do the extra research to answer nearly any question thrown at them!

The development and trialling of FarmSAT is overseen by the Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association in collaboration with DairyTAS, Fruit Growers Tasmania, Tasmanian Agricultural Productivity Group, Tasmanian Quality Assured Inc., Vineyards Association of Tasmania, Department of Primary Industries and Water and the three Tasmanian NRM Committees.
