Overview
The TFGA has supported Landcare since its inception over
a decade ago and it is proud of the record of Tasmanian farmers
in adopting Landcare farming as a fundamental way to ensure
that their industry is sustainably managing its natural resources.
Over 40% of Tasmanian farmers are involved in Landcare and
there are over 300 Landcare and associated care groups in
the State.
Across Australia farmers manage over 60% of the land and
70% of the available water that is used for irrigation: and
so that is why it is important to involve farmers in on-ground
action to improve natural resource management at the farm,
catchment and regional level.
Landcare is not afraid of the word "profit" as
Landcare recognizes that farmers earn their living through
working with the land. As such, the main goal from investing
in Landcare is more profitable, competitive and sustainable
primary industries.
Landcare seeks to achieve public benefits by treating natural
resource management issues at source and on farms. Landcare
provides funding assistance to farmers and other land managers
so they are able to adequately address land management challenges.
The National Landcare Community Support Program will support
strategic activities such as improving water quality, fencing
of river areas for stock control and the provision of off-stream
watering tanks, exploiting effluent as a resource, revegetation,
improved soil and salinity management and the development
of more sustainable farming systems.
