The QLD Government (supported by Ausveg and HAL) have produced a wonderful resource for vegetable growers in the workshop manual and accompanying trainer’s guide for identification of insects, spiders and mites in Vegetable crops.

Title: 'Identification of insects, spiders and mites in vegetable crops: workshop manual' and 'Identification of insects, spiders and mites in vegetable crops: trainer's handbook'

Author/s: Workshop manual by Sue Heisswolf, Iain Kay and Bronwyn Walsh; Trainer's handbook by Sue Heisswolf, Bronwyn Walsh and Larissa Bilston

Published:    2010

Both the workshop manual and the trainer’s guide publications are in full colour. The workshop manual contains over 180 colour images of insects and many line drawings. Workshop manual is 78 pages including an index. The trainer's manual is 68 pages and includes workshop plans and sample slides.

The workshop in general
Accurate and confident identification of the insects, spiders and mites in vegetable crops is the first step towards successful management of pests and natural enemies. It is an essential prerequisite for crop monitoring, which is the backbone of an effective pest management program. This workshop manual and trainer's handbook were compiled as part of an insect, spider and mite identification program for Australian vegetable growers and their service providers.
The workshop training is designed to help growers and service providers to:
• know how to collect and preserve insects for identification
• be able to classify most common insects (particularly those of horticultural significance) into broad groups
• appreciate the importance of these groups in pest, predator and parasite identification and management
• collect and classify some insect pests, predators and parasites of horticultural importance.

Workshop Manual
The workshop manual is designed as the main resource for delivering a workshop program on pest and natural enemy identification in vegetable crops.
The manual contains basic information on insect classification, life cycles and collecting.  It contains information on many pest and beneficial insects, spiders and mites, and is vividly illustrated with numerous line drawings and colour photographs.
The workshop manual is a large document, it can be downloaded in full in low resolution for online viewing or downloaded in sections in high resolution for printing by clicking here http://era.deedi.qld.gov.au/1904/

The Trainers Guide
The trainer’s handbook is designed to accompany the workshop manual.  It provides detailed plans for designing and delivering a workshop, a toolbox of training materials and resources, and sample forms and PowerPoint slides to use in a workshop.  It is full of tips and practical advice.  The handbook also contains a section on the educational theories behind the workshop program.

The Trainer’s guide is a smaller document and can be downloaded by clicking here http://era.deedi.qld.gov.au/1924/

If you are unable to access the online manuals a hard copy can be obtained from the TFGA by contacting Mel King at the TFGA office 6332 1800
