Drought

Tasmania’s latest drought began in 2005.  Its impact has been dramatic, particularly in the midlands and across the eastern half of the state. Some areas of the state are officially declared as drought-affected. They include the midlands, east coast, Fingal Valley and Flinders Island.

Some have exceptional circumstances (EC) applying. That means that farmers within the EC zones may be eligible for relief payments. They can claim for income support. It is called the Exceptional Circumstances Relief Payment (ECRP). They may also be able to claim for assistance in paying loans. This is called the Exceptional Circumstances Interest Rate Subsidy (ECIRS).

Details of each of these financial assistance measures can be found at:

The EC declaration for the affected Tasmanian areas expires in April 2010 so they will be reassessed in February/March 2010.

The TFGA has been active in drought support measures. In 2008 Drought Network Tasmania was established to enable the TFGA to coordinate the activities of more than 25 drought service providers.  A contact list is available to assist you in accessing these support services.

The State Drought Taskforce is a separate body. The State Government established it in 2008 following pressure by the TFGA. It is a strategic policy body overseeing the management of the drought. You can download an information sheet. The Drought Taskforce meets every two months. Contact the TFGA if you want any matters raised.
